One day she was handing in her Master thesis on Media Studies and AI and the next she was interviewing at Bechtle Munich/Regensburg, where her curiosity was immediately piqued. The plan was to put together a new team specialising in the cloud transformation. “It had a start-up feel to it,” says Laura. “This wasn’t your run-of-the-mill 9 to 5 job. It was an opportunity to make a real difference, work independently and grow as a person.”
“It had a start-up feel about it. This wasn’t your run-of-the-mill 9 to 5 job.”
The draw towards IT became strong during her studies, with Laura particularly enthused by AI and IT project management, and the sales job offer was quickly followed by the first exciting project. A customer decided to transform its IT by leveraging the Google Cloud platform and VMware virtualisation technology in a multi-year project which saw Laura work intensively with the customer, partners and colleagues.
Laura has to show a lot of initiative in order to do her job really well. “I’m very passionate about my work and I’m driven to constantly develop my expertise,” says the 32-year-old. While that may be challenging, it definitely pays off: “I have an incredibly large network of exciting contacts,” says Laura. Working closely with partners such as Google, AWS and Microsoft, customers and colleagues is part and parcel of day-to-day business. “I love rubbing elbows with them all, gaining new insights and having a finger on the pulse of the latest IT trends.”
“From day one, I was wholeheartedly supported when it came to developing myself on a personal level.”
And this was behind Laura’s move last year from Sales to a more technical field and an ever-growing team of some 40 cloud architects and systems engineers. This kind of switch is unusual, but not impossible at Bechtle: “I had the opportunity thanks to the wealth of expertise I’d gathered. From day one, I was wholeheartedly supported when it came to developing myself on a personal level and helping my team grow by taking part in training courses and doing certifications. I was always drawn to the technical side of things,” says Laura.
She spends her days either in the new office, visiting customers or working from home. “We have a really great informal atmosphere, which is palpable at our team and system house events,” she says.
Today, as a cloud expert, she helps businesses optimise their public-cloud costs and resources, ensuring her customers always have an overview of their cloud activities so they can exploit them to achieve their corporate goals. While she loves the niche she’s carved out for herself, she’s hoping to specialise even more. Laura’s hunger to learn has not yet been sated.
