Challenge.

As a specialist in dental prosthesis and implantology, the BEGO Group, consisting of BEGO, BEGO Bremer Goldschlägerei Wilhelm Herbst GmbH & Co. KG, BEGO Implant Systems GmbH & Co. KG, BEGO Medical GmbH and other international subsidiaries is a household name to dental technicians and dentists across the globe. From the root to the crown, the product portfolio of this fifth generation, owner-led company includes innovative devices, dental instruments, materials, implants, services and procedures for manufacturing and processing dentures. For over 100 years, BEGO has been at the forefront of innovation, setting new standards in its industry. The company emphasises progress, efficiency and quality that is made in Germany, not only for its products but also the technologies it uses.

When its on-prem, dual data centre backup solution with storage virtualisation had to be renewed, the company contacted their long-standing IT service provider, Bechtle. As the existing solution was outdated and there were reasons for concern from a security standpoint, the dental technology specialists were looking for a secure backup solution that was able to process large amounts of data efficiently. Bremer Goldschlägerei Wilhelm Herbst, which is a CAD/CAM-pioneer in the industry and offers proprietary 3D printing solutions, software tools and services generates huge amounts of data. For BEGO, it was imperative to protect this data, while at the same time implementing a more user-friendly and sustainable system.

Implementing the new backup solution by Bechtle has done wonders in terms of speed for both operations and backup. Rubrik’s intuitive dashboards significantly enhance usability and are optimally connected. We can do our data management tasks such as backup and restore a lot faster and more efficiently and both our IT department and our employees use the available self service functions more frequently. This means a lot less effort involved for backups and much more satisfaction across the company.

Solution.

After comparing different providers, BEGO decided to opt for a combination of Pure Storage and Rubrik for their data backup, since they had already been testing Pure Storage all-flash arrays and were very happy with their performance and handling. Both X20R3 Pure Storage all-flash arrays implemented by Bechtle were mirrored across two geographically dispersed data centres via Fibre Channel. This way, BEGO’s data is deduplicated and compressed in during operation without affecting the system’s performance. Pure Storage SafeMode™ will also protect the company from their data being encrypted. The system is also complemented by Rubrik’s data security solution, which not only detects ransomware attacks in their early stages, but also the implications of these attacks on the company’s infrastructure (e.g. which servers and applications are affected). At the same time, Rubrik protects corporate data from cyberthreats by means of immutable access-controlled backups and a zero-trust data management approach.

Much to the liking of Bego’s backup admins, Rubrik has no agent-based dependencies and instead works with backup policies that can even be inherited so that new servers and workloads aren’t forgotten in the backup process. The Rubrik data security solution is also used to make SaaS applications such as M365 more resilient and resistant against ransomware attacks. In combination with the two Pure Storage all-flash arrays, Rubrik’s powerful solution for data backup, recovery and analytics to mitigate ransomware attacks provides the best performance and extensive security, enabling BEGO to work fast and efficiently and giving them strong allies that they can rely on. Migrating data from the existing storage virtualisation to the Pure Storage all-flash arrays required expertise of both the old and the new technologies. Bechtle mastered this challenge with style thanks to their extensive know-how, allowing a smooth transition.

The new backup solution by Bechtle holds huge advantages for BEGO. Data backup and recovery is a lot faster, making it easier to handle the large volumes of data that BEGO deals with on a daily basis.
