To meet the high safety standards, BLT Baselland Transport AG is continually expanding its infrastructure. The transport company consistently concentrates on its own core competencies and the expertise available within the company. In other areas, the BLT relies on the knowledge of service providers. Many projects in the IT sector, for example, are implemented with Bechtle, where specialists have in-depth know-how - among other things in the areas of networks, firewalls, WLAN, storage or server server infrastructure. BLT concentrates on client management and first level support. In second and third level support, Bechtle supports BLT‘s IT. Thus, a wide range of network and security measures are implemented in BLT Baselland Transport AG, where the investments are always well planned and calculated. The renewal of the WLAN infrastructure was another such project planned well in advance.
The transport company‘s WLAN is distributed over various locations. In addition, the IT plays updates into the systems of the vehicles and the tablets of the employees. Also diagnostic data is transmitted daily via the WLAN from the vehicle to the backend or current stock levels, which are read in at the various warehouse locations via hand scanners. With a new WLAN infrastructure, BLT wanted to achieve easier and more secure access for vehicles and employees to the company‘s own WLAN within its 7/24 operation, as well as better monitoring of the flow of information within the infrastructure. And then came Corona - and with it new challenges with home offices and scarce hardware stocks.
The new company-wide WLAN not only had to be secure, compatible and easy to use - all employees‘ devices also had to have protected and controlled access from home to the company network and the Internet. After Bechtle had presented various solutions from its strategic manufacturers, BLT opted for a solution from Cisco. The broad product range of Cisco covered all requirements and offers a homogeneous overall solution with its comprehensive security architecture. With the components Cisco Identity Security Engine (ISE), Cisco Umbrella and Cisco Secure Firewall, BLT‘s WLAN is easy to manage, secure and stable. The corporate IT recognises possible security breaches and threats automatically, seamlessly and quickly. Cisco Umbrella protects employees‘ clients - regardless of where they work and even outside the company network. The Cisco Identity Services Engine (ISE) automatically implements the company‘s own security guidelines in conjunction with other technical measures. This also ensures reliable and secure control of network access. In turn, a Cisco firewall set up by Bechtle according to BLT‘s needs protects the existing network infrastructure and integrates powerful threat protection functions.
For the homogeneous system, BLT also chose Cisco as the manufacturer for the hardware of the new WLAN infrastructure. Bechtle circumvented potential supply bottlenecks during the Corona pandemic through good planning, sufficient project lead time, and, if necessary, with flexible, temporary solutions. Bechtle set up redundant Cisco WLAN controllers at the various BLT locations. This reduced the time spent by IT on maintenance and release management to a minimum. If a controller fails or is updated, the other active system takes over. The previously very tight maintenance windows can now be planned more freely by BLT.
Bechtle rolled out the entire Cisco WLAN infrastructure in a best practice setting. Since then, BLT has been continuously improving its WLAN by questioning configurations and settings and adapting them to the current state. Here too, Bechtle is always on hand to support BLT with its knowledge.
