SAP HANA on IBM Power - an unbeatable DUO!

A rigid infrastructure in times of growing data volumes and volatile, constantly changing business demands leads in most cases to inefficient hardware usage. This in turn means additional acquisition costs, increased operational maintenance, more energy and is therefore anything but sustainable. But how do you cover peak loads without wasting resources? Or to put it another way: How do you reconcile flexibility, performance, reliability and security?

SAP HANA on IBM Power is a powerful combination of software and hardware designed specifically to meet these requirements. It combines the in-memory technology of SAP HANA with the high-performance architecture of IBM Power servers to provide a scalable, robust and efficient platform for business applications.

Why SAP Hana on IBM Power?

  1. 1. Scalability

  2. Reduce the risk of over-provisioning with flexible hybrid cloud solutions, instant scaling and pay-per-use consumption options. IBM Power enables up to 16 production SAP HANA instances and additional workloads on a single system. Capacity expansions are possible up to 40 TB - the largest supported capacity for SAP S/4HANA and SAP BW.
  1. 2. Costs and sustainability

  2. More performance with fewer machines means less power consumption, less space, less maintenance and therefore a lower carbon footprint. Processor efficiency and consolidation of servers & workloads enables operating cost savings of up to 50%, contributing significantly to a better TCO.
  1. 3. Flexibility

  2. Thanks to the integrated IBM PowerVM virtualization solution, capacities can be quickly provisioned at the push of a button - with a granularity of only 0.01 cores or 1 GB without DB restart. CPU cores can be allocated individually to the productive SAP HANA instances - and not on the basis of a whole or half CPU socket.
  1. 4. Reliability and safety

  2. IBM Power has been number one in reliability for 14 years, making it one of the most stable and resilient solutions running core SAP workloads. In addition to 99.999 percent uptime, IBM Power has built-in storage protection tools that detect and fix potential problems before they lead to system failures. Data and applications are protected with end-to-end security through new transparent storage encryption without performance degradation.
  1. 5. Cloud compatible

  2. If you are looking to extend your IT infrastructure into the cloud, IBM Power Servers are an ideal choice because they can be seamlessly integrated into hybrid and multicloud environments. Certified for use with SAP HANA, the IBM Power Virtual Server approach enables organizations to scale their on-premises architecture to a dedicated cloud environment - on-demand and on a subscription basis.

Countdown – SAP-Migration 2027

Companies still using SAP ERP today will have to migrate to SAP S/4 HANA with SAP HANA as the underlying database by 2027. In this context, SAP has announced that it will discontinue its support for the old ERP applications by 2027.

For your migration, rely on a high-performance and fail-safe infrastructure - like IBM Power. We will be happy to support you!

Green IT: The path to a sustainable data centre (German)

Digital transformation and ecological sustainability are two of the major issues currently occupying companies in Switzerland. And they are indeed closely linked: Digital solutions ensure greater efficiency - but at the same time, data centres and digital applications also need a lot of energy: all data centres worldwide consume 200 to 250 terawatt hours (TWh) of electricity every year. That is about 1 % of the world's electricity demand. And in terms of CO2 emissions, IT has a greater impact than aviation. However, there is still a lot of potential for savings in Swiss data centres.
Look forward to exciting insights and practical solutions to make the digital transformation more ecologically sustainable. Our two experts Reto Gennoni, Alliance Manager at Bechtle Switzerland and Etienne Grosjean, Regional Manager Suisse Romande and Country Leader Power Systems at IBM Switzerland, will share their experiences and insights with you and give valuable tips on how companies can improve their energy efficiency and achieve their ecological goals at the same time.
