The concept of Identity & Access Management.
In a world characterized by constant change, reacting quickly and flexibly to new challenges is the key to success. IAM offers great support for this. This often requires the integration of additional applications and devices into the infrastructure. The resulting increase in IT complexity harbors considerable risks, both in terms of data protection and IT security. Responsible handling of authorizations and roles is becoming increasingly complex. This is why the security aspect has top priority. IAM ensures that only authorized persons and systems can access selected information and resources. This protects sensitive data, whether in internal access or in interaction with customers, partners and external applications and APIs. However, IAM also goes far beyond security. The automation of user access and roles increases efficiency and productivity, reduces the time required to manage user accounts and passwords and thus minimizes errors. In this way, future challenges can be mastered, compliance simplified and costs saved at the same time.
Artificial intelligence in IAM - intelligent future or loss of autonomy?
Various approaches for the use of artificial intelligence (AI for short) in IAM already exist today. With the help of AI, identification processes are automated, compliance processes are simplified, access policies are created proactively and the detection of security risks is strengthened. However, in addition to the many advantages, the use of AI also brings ethical challenges. Data protection issues must be considered, particularly with regard to the processing and storage of sensitive and personal data, such as facial recognition. It should also not be overlooked that algorithmic decisions can exacerbate existing discrepancies through bias. The power of machines to decide on access and authorizations can lead to a loss of autonomy for users. It is therefore important for decision-makers to take responsibility and use AI in a way that respects people's individual freedoms and values.
My conclusion.
At a time when digitalization continues to expand and the associated security threats are growing, IAM is indispensable. Those who recognize and use IAM as a strategic security tool will have a decisive advantage. It is therefore important to view IAM not as a short-term solution, but as a long-term strategic investment in the security and future viability of the company. It is particularly important to address the ethical challenges and take measures to respect people's rights and values.
