Sustainability in the Summer with Bechtle
Now that we are deep into the summer, many of us are still planning those last days of the summer holidays - perhaps sitting by the pool with a pina colada or dancing away at a music festival, you all deserve a break no matter what you are doing. However, as most of you will know, travelling can have a significant impact on the environment and the local communities we visit. That's why we are here to share some tips and tricks on how to travel more sustainably, along with advice on planning a greener way to attend festivals as well as a what we are doing here at Bechtle to do our bit!
Get outdoors and leave no trace!

Each year, an estimated 250,000 tents are abandoned at festivals across the UK!
We all want to make the most of the British summer on those occasional days when the weather is great, but this shouldn’t come with a wasteful price.
Whether it’s for a one-off festival or testing the waters on a family camp, Decathlon’s ‘No Tent Left behind’ return scheme helps get you out exploring without it being a cost to the planet.
It’s not just tents we can be conscious of when it comes to our outdoor explorations but a bountiful of sustainable kit available to make your nights away in a field even greener. From cork sleeps matts to recycled bags, there’s plenty of earth friendly items to invest in.
Get buzzing in the sun!
If the garden is the furthest you feel like wandering in the heat, why not make it a brighter and friendlier place by planting wild flowers to cultivate a happy place for nature at home. The seeds are easy to grow with massive benefits for vital insects such as bees.

Did you know that July is known as the Plastic Free Month?
Participating in No Plastic July is an opportunity to make meaningful changes that reduce plastic waste. Here are some steps individuals and communities can take:
1. Refuse Single Use Plastics:
Opt for reusable alternatives such as cloth bags, stainless steel water bottles, and glass containers. Say no to plastic straws, cutlery, and packaging.
3. Practice DIY Solutions:
Make your own cleaning products, personal care items, and snacks to avoid plastic packaging. Use cloth wraps and containers for food storage.
2. Choose Sustainable Products:
Support businesses that offer plastic free products and packaging. Look for items made from biodegradable or recyclable materials.
4. Educate and Advocate:
Spread the word about the impacts of plastic pollution and the importance of reducing plastic use. Advocate for policies that support plastic reduction and waste management.
5. Join Community Efforts:
Participate in local clean up events, workshops, and sustainability initiatives. Collaborate with neighbours, schools, and organisations to promote a plastic free lifestyle. For example the Umbrella Fair, Climate Emergency Action Hub campaigns on environmental issues.

One of the many missions within the Sustainability Squad is to reduce waste and give back to the local community, therefore we have decided to partner up with a local food bank to put our food waste to good use – The Salvation Army in Chippenham.
As a result of the cost-of-living crisis, some food banks have seen a dramatic rise in need. Therefore, the Salvation Army are reaching people who can no longer feed themselves or their families and who are cut off from other sources of support.
Find out more here and donate your unwanted food items!
Thanks from all within the Bechtle UK Sustainability squad.
