Discover the biggest trends for the data centre of tomorrow.
What does tomorrow’s perfect infrastructure look like?
CIOs ask themselves this question every time they update or expand their data centres, because if this infrastructure is to serve as a foundation for the company’s activities, it must be able to adapt to changing needs and constraints.
Key factors to consider in 2024 include:
- The emergence of new technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), 5G and quantum computing and the related increase in the volumes of data processed and transmitted
- Environmental standards such as the European energy efficiency directive updated in September 2023 that requires data centre energy consumption to be tracked
- Security standards including NIS 2 that will require organisations to ready themselves to tackle threats such as ransomware and data loss from October 2024
- The increase in remote working since the COVID-19 pandemic and the trade-off between security and user experience
- The shortage of skilled workers in IT.
To combat these challenges, we’re seeing a trend towards data centre automation, particularly as a result of AI integrated into the solutions offered by manufacturers and providers on a server and storage level, but also for networking and monitoring. Automation makes up lacking human resources, minimises errors and ensures the perfect balance between optimum performance and enhanced security.
Another factor to take into account is how interoperable the infrastructure components deployed are as they should be as portable as possible to adapt to increasingly common edge and cloud architectures.
Then you have to think about the sustainability and carbon footprint of the solutions chosen, not only to comply with current regulations, but also to keep energy costs down.
